Some memories stay with us—not just in our minds, but in our bodies, reactions, and relationships. At Raha Psychology, we offer EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) to help you process difficult experiences, reduce emotional distress, and reclaim your sense of peace.
Whether you’re struggling with trauma, anxiety, or lingering pain from the past, EMDR can be a powerful tool to support healing—without needing to retell every detail of your story.
EMDR is a therapy approach designed to help you process and heal from traumatic or distressing experiences. It works by using bilateral stimulation—such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds—to help your brain reprocess memories that are “stuck.”
When we experience something overwhelming, our brains sometimes can’t fully make sense of it. EMDR helps “unstick” those memories so they no longer trigger the same emotional intensity.
Think of it like clearing a traffic jam in your nervous system—making room for calm, clarity, and forward movement.
It’s also helpful for people who feel stuck in patterns that talk therapy alone hasn’t been able to shift.
EMDR always begins with a strong foundation. Your therapist will get to know you, understand your goals, and ensure you feel safe and grounded. You’ll also learn calming and regulation strategies to use before and during reprocessing work.
Together, you’ll identify specific memories, thoughts, or themes that feel emotionally “charged” or intrusive. You’ll also explore the beliefs you’ve developed about yourself because of these experiences (e.g., “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault”).
Your therapist will guide you through short sets of eye movements or other bilateral stimulation while you focus on a memory. This allows your brain to begin reprocessing the event—shifting how it’s stored and reducing the emotional intensity.
Once the distress lessens, your therapist will help you strengthen more adaptive beliefs (e.g., “I’m in control now,” “I’m safe,” or “I’m enough”).
Sessions often include a body scan to check for lingering tension, and grounding techniques to ensure you leave feeling safe and stable.
EMDR can feel different for everyone. You may feel intense emotions, have vivid images, or notice body sensations during processing. This is all normal—and your therapist will be there every step of the way, helping you move through the experience safely and at your own pace.
You do not have to retell your trauma in detail for EMDR to work. In fact, many clients find this aspect of EMDR especially empowering.
